Carl's Story

After graduating from Bonny Eagle HS in June 1964, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering [Electrical Engineering] degree from the University of Michigan in May 1969. After completing initial nuclear engineering and submarine training between June 1969 and August 1970, I reported to my first submarine USS Tullibee [SSN 597] in Groton, Connecticut and served there as Reactor Control, Sonar , and Supply Officer as well as qualifying in Submarines and as Engineer Officer of nuclear powered warships. While on Tullibee, Mary Ann Bartram and I were married in a wonderful Navy ceremony in her hometown of Sharon, Connecticut. We also made our first trip to Europe together visiting Scotland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy , and France. Between January and August 1973, I completed Submarine Officer Advanced Training and Poseidon Weapons Officer School. I reported to USS Stonewall Jackson [SSBN 634] [Gold] in September 1973 and served as Weapons Officer there, completing four strategic deterrent patrols. In January 1976, I reported as Engineer Officer of USS Glenard P. Lipscomb [SSN 685]. While I was on board Lipscomb, we completed four forward area submarine operations and I qualified for Command of Nuclear Powered Submarines. Our daughter Heather was born during my first deployment and I did not get to see her until she was 4 1/2 months old. Mary Ann was a trooper. Also got to visit Scotland, Norway, Italy, Spain, Greece, and England. In March 1979, I reported to the CINCLANTFLT Nuclear Power Examining Board as one of twelve post Engineer inspectors of the operations of all nuclear powered warships in the Atlantic Fleet. Although Mary Ann and I lived in Virginia Beach, Va, this was a traveling job and I spent a great deal of time in Scotland, England, Spain, Italy, the Indian Ocean, and up and down the east coast of the US. Mary Ann joined me in Scotland and England on occasion for some wonderful time together. After completing Submarine Executive Officer training in May 1981 [during which time our son, Robert, was born], I reported as Executive Officer USS Hammerhead [SSN 663]. While aboard Hammerhead, we completed four more forward area submarine operations and visited the Indian Ocean, many Mediterranean ports, as well as Scotland and England. In March 1984, Mary Ann and I brought Heather and Robert back to Connecticut where I served as Commanding Officer, Nuclear Power Training Unit Windsor, one of the three sites used to train the Navy's new officer and enlisted nuclear power operators and where I had been a student and met Mary Ann fourteen years earlier. This was a great tour for us as we got to visit both the Connecticut and Maine grandparents frequently. Between September 1986 and March 1987, I completed Prospective Submarine Commanding Officer training at Naval Reactors and later at COMSUBPAC. In April 1...Expand for more
987, I reported as Commanding Officer, USS Dallas [SSN 700], back in Groton, Connecticut. While aboard Dallas, we completed two forward area submarine operations and the Navy's first Depot Modernization of 688 class submarines at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. After completing Trident Submarine Commanding Officer training between April and July of 1990, Mary Ann, Heather, Robert, and I moved to Silverdale Washington in July 1990 where I served as Commanding Officer of USS Henry M. Jackson [SSBN 730]. During that tour we completed four strategic deterrent patrols as well as visiting San Diego and Sitka, Alaska. In December 1992, I moved on to serve as COMSUBPAC / COMNAVSURFPAC / COMNAVAIRPAC Representative at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and later as Director of the CINCPACFLT PACNORWEST Regional Maintenance Center. I retired from the US Navy on 1 September 1995 and came to work at Commonwealth Edison Nuclear [later EXELON Nuclear] in October 1995. Mary Ann, the family, and I moved to Naperville, Illinois at that time. During my approximately twelve years with EXELON, I served as Director of Finance, Business Operations, and Strategic Planning for the nuclear company and as Director of Operations, Engineering, and Training at Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station. Like the Navy, I worked with some incredeibly bright, hard working, and high achieving young people at Braidwood and EXELON. Mary Ann and I visited Sweden while I was at EXELON and brought home a VOLVO. I retired from EXELON In May 2007 so that Mary Ann and I could travel while we were still young enough to really enjoy it. We started with a two week+ trip to her mom's family's ancestral home in Ireland, where we got to visit with many first cousins and had a memorable stay. Later we made our first cruise and land trip to Alaska together, followed by a Panama Canal Cruise. In subsequent years we have visited Key West, saw the last night time shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral, been to Niagara Falls, Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, the San Juan Islands in Washington, New York a few times, Yellowstone, Honolulu, Michigan's Upper peninsula and Mackinac Island, and our beloved Maine many times. Looking forward to getting back to Virginia Beach soon and making our first visit to Campobello as well. Over the years I have played a little golf, collected and built some model trains concentrating on New England railroads and particularly Maine Central, done a lot of genealogical history work, played some baseball and later softball, hiked some Maine trails, fished some Maine and Washington rivers and streams, and enjoyed every minute along side my dear Mary Ann. We are blessed to have two great grandsons, Rory and Owen, that we get to take care of two or three days a week. WE are thrilled when they arrive, exhausted when they leave, and exhilarated in between.
